Design
With a dramatic design inspired by Mercedes' Formula 1 racecars, the second-generation SLK is even more fetching than the original. It's also slightly larger and more powerful than its predecessor, yet still possesses the upscale roadster character that made it so likable over the years. Even better than the added space is the car's redesigned dashboard with its cleaner layout and higher-quality interior materials.
The current-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class luxury roadster has been available since the 2005 model year. It's a proper sporting roadster thanks to its stiff body structure, rear-wheel drive and available sport-tuned suspension and strong brakes. For power, Mercedes offers a choice of two V6s as well as a muscular V8 from AMG, Mercedes' in-house performance tuner.
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is little changed. Like the larger, costlier SL-Class, SLKs have a power-folding hardtop. They come in three versions. The SLK280 has a 228-hp 3.0-liter V6 engine. The SLK350 has a 268-hp 3.5-liter V6. The SLK55 is tuned by Mercedes' AMG performance arm and has a 355-hp 5.5-liter V8. SLK280 offers a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic transmission. A Sport Package for SLK280 and 350 includes firmer suspension, specific wheels and tires, body trim, and steering wheel shift buttons for the automatic transmission. Optional on all is Mercedes' Airscarf feature that delivers heated air through neck-level vents in the seatbacks. Available on the 280 or 350, it includes unique interior and exterior trim as well as the Airscarf option.
Safety
Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, side airbags, and knee airbags.
